Blog Post 4- UNH Alumni Photography Exhibition Write-Up

This piece is called Chola Cactus, 2015 by Adam Tracksler. This piece has a solid black background but because of the lighting in the gallery you are able to see the reflection of the gallery in the image. This image caught my eye out of the other photos in the gallery quite instantly. It was quite different than all of the other images, and was printed not on photo paper but more so a plastic/glass like material. I think one of the main reason why it caught my eye right away was the simplicity of it. There is not anything for your eye to dance around, its just the cactus and thats it. Although its not super nature-like it does have a earthy feel to it and artwork like that resonates with me the most.
When I first look at the picture the first thing that stands out to me is the texture and the detail you can clearly see in the cactus and on the jar. The reason why this stands out so much is how the picture was taken. Because it using blacks and shadows it highlights the jar with the cactus in it allow you to see all the detail in the image since that is the only thing that the camera needed to focus on when the photographer was taking the photo. I really do like how this photo is lit, it really allows the image to pop and really allows your eye to be drown to the main subject of the image.
When I look at this piece of work it allows to be think of life, peacefulness and solitude. The way the lighting is the darkness with a little bit of light shinning on the cactus draws me to the thought of solitude but within solitude you can find peace within that solitude and I feel that those are two big parts of life that you have to deal with and come to terms with. I also feel like in other ways that the darkness of the image is the solitude where as the light is the life and together that is what makes the peace in life. Solitude is not always bad, as shown in this picture, sometimes it highlights what something is really about; this is where someone truly uncovers oneself.
In conclusion, I feel as this is a very powerful piece of art. It is very simple but I believe it is portraying a very big and important message. The photographer created a very powerful piece. It is amazing how beautiful of a piece you can do with just lighting. I also believe that sometimes a very simple piece of art can speak louder than something that has a lot going on and thats the beauty of art, you are able to display your feelings in different ways and it may not always be portrayed the way you though but to that person you image can mean so much more than you expected. I'm glad we took time out of the class to go look at the gallery.

HW

For the most part I am quite happy with how this picture came out. I feel that they sidewalk leads to to Thompson Hall. I do like how the image is pretty symmetrical. If I could change one thing about this image I would see if I could get the image more level. I feel like it is a little uneven and I think I would like it better if I was able to get the camera higher up.

Blog Post 3: Color Theory Evaluation + Talking About Composition

Part 1:

I choose the three pictures. My absolute favorite from this color theory homework was chosen by myself as well as the group so that's why I only have three in this blog post.   The first picture I choose was the one with the rabbit with the red bandana. The reason why I like this picture and chose it for my blog post was because how the rabbit makes the red on the bandana pop and even though the rabbit, I feel, is interesting subject matter, my eye goes to the red first which was the main concept of this project. Also everything I wanted in the picture was in focus, the rabbit and the bandana.  The next picture of the flowers was chosen by the group. I also really like this picture when I am looking at a lot less photos and able to isolate it and go away from all of the red. The reason why I did not choose this one in my top 3 is because I believe there was just too much red and it was overwhelming at the time. Now that it is isolated I do enjoy the picture a lot more and appreciate the photo. I like how detailed the flower is and you can see a lot more texture on the flower then you usually would just looking at the flower and I really love when a photographer is able to take a simple thing like a flower and enhance its beauty. The last picture myself and the group chose as a top three. What I really like about this picture is the simplicity of it. I took an everyday object that I feel is usually overlooked and made it the center of my photograph. Not only can you see the detail of the crayon but also the stone that the crayon is on which allows my eyes to easily move from the bottom of the crayon to the top.

Part 2:

Out of the three pictures posted this one was my favorite right away, I was drawn to it and it would take a really strong argument to lead me away from this picture. One of the big reasons why I chose this picture is because I love nature and pictures of nature. It really speaks to me and personally I feel like people have as much appreciation of our earth as I do.  Onto the composition and why I like it from an artistic point of view. First off, my eye goes right to the billboard. I find it humorous that there is a mountain billboard because it the background there is actual mountains but that what drew me into it the most I think. The billboard is not right in the center which allows there to be more things surrounding the the billboard which really gives you the feel of openness. There is also a lot of leading lines in the pictures which allows your eye to freely move though the photograph without getting lost in the image.
The colors of this image are captured perfectly and how he decided to take the picture works really well. Colors: the colors are different but they are all dull blues, greens, whites and browns which allows the picture to flow nicely and your eye is not stopped at one overly bearing color that could of been in the photograph. I also like how he decided to keep everything in the picture clear. Going back up to what I said perviously, by allowing the whole photo to be crisp it allows one to appreciate nature and the mountains in the background and how beautiful this land is. It also allows the photo to be more open and like the leading lines it gives the fewer a sense of space and that they are not just stuck at one spot of the photo. Overall it was a very well shot photograph that allows the viewer to easily move throughout the photograph and for a nerd like me also appreciate nature and how beautiful this planet is!

Color Theory

I chose red for the color theory homework because lately the color red seems to be very prominent in my life, whether its seeing the color when I look around or just feel really connected to the color when I see it.

To me the color red symbolizes:
1.  Power
2. Confidence
3. Anger
4. Love
5. Danger

I find it funny how one color can mean so much, good and bad. It can also pose as emotions such as anger and love, but the two that I feel red symbolizes are complete opposites. How can red be anger and love when the two are so very different and you do not ever want to be angered at the ones you love. Why are they interchanged? The color red has so many different meanings to me in my everyday life and thats why its such a fascinating color and I chose to photograph it.
